Ethical backpacks

Ethical backpacks

More and more of us are paying attention to the production conditions and materials used in the manufacture of our bags, clothes and accessories. The words sustainability and conscious are also part of the DNA of many brands that feel responsible for the footprint they leave on the environment. There's a long way to go, but the efforts are there. No one is perfect. The important thing is transparency and good faith. Vegan backpacks, organic cotton backpacks, recycled canvas backpacks, PET (recyclable polyester) backpacks, LWG certified ecological leather backpacks, recycled nylon backpacks... on the Keus website you'll find a selection of ethical and eco-responsible backpacks that respect the environment, people and animals. For men. For women. And for raccoons (and why not?).

Backpacks made in an eco-responsible and ethical way

An ethical backpack must be the fruit of a virtuous production circuit based on: good working conditions for employees eco-responsible materials environmentally-friendly manufacturing conditions Numerous labels, organisations and certifications help us to see things more clearly and to make our way in the small world of ethical and ecological backpack production.  The Berlin-based brand Ucon Acrobatics is aware of environmental issues and offers ethical, sustainable backpacks manufactured in a responsible production circuit. Depending on the collection, the bags are made from cotton or recycled polyester (PET) from recycled bottles. For its commitment to the environment and society and its transparency, the Ucon Acrobatics brand has obtained B Corp certification in 2019. It also works with My Climate.  Big up too for the American brand North Street, which is 100% locally produced. To manufacture its ethical backpacks, North Street employs local craftsmen and uses fabrics made by companies located in the US to reduce the pollution caused by imported goods. It's a virtuous and ethical circuit, just the way we like it.

Ethical backpacks made from recycled and responsible materials

Another leading brand is making its mark in the world of ethical, sustainable and eco-responsible backpacks: RAINS. This Danish company relies on transparency, recycled materials such as PU (polyester), and no fluorinated compounds or endocrine disruptors. When it comes to manufacturing, RAINS goes even further: it works with suppliers who meet its ethical and ecological standards, AND it inspects them regularly using amfori BSCI, a global auditing organisation specialising in ethical and sustainable business practices.   The German brand with the two dots PinqPonq also offers backpacks made from 100% certified sustainable fabrics. Pinqponq backpacks are made from polyester recycled from old PET bottles.

Sustainable and eco-responsible vegan backpacks

Looking for a vegan backpack to carry your laptop? Choose an Ucon Acrobatics bag (them again!). All Ucon Acrobatics backpacks are made from PET and are vegan.  The brand is an official PETA partner. And as they don't exploit pandas in their production facilities, you can go in with your eyes shut.

Ethical leather backpacks

In koala country, the Bellroy brand uses skins for its leather backpacks that come from tanneries that are members of the Leather Working Group (LWG). This certification guarantees sustainable and responsible leather production. Alongside its sustainable and eco-responsible leather backpacks, Bellroy also offers a fine selection of urban backpacks made from recycled polyester, recycled ripstop, etc. Bellroy claims to be a member of the B Corp movement. Good luck! The leathers of the designer and minimalist backpacks from Scandinavian brand Sandqvist also come from tanneries certified gold/silver by the international organisation Leather Working Group. The leather used for the bags comes from animals used for dairy or meat production. A member of the Fair Wear Foundation, Sandqvist also uses organic cotton and PET (recycled polyester) for its backpacks.

How do you choose an ethical backpack?

Look at the materials used and find out about the manufacturing conditions.  We told you: nobody is perfect and the road to 100% ecological, sustainable and ethical production is full of difficulties. Choose a brand that is transparent and honest. If it has ecological certifications and labels such as the Leather Working Group, B Corp certification, etc., that's even better! Beware of greenwashing and brands that are just window dressing. "Work Hard, Stay Humble.  In any case, that's how we've selected the brands we offer on the KEUS online site.  Another tip for choosing your ethical backpack? Choose a bag with a guarantee. Lifetime is best. What's the point? Because it's not only a guarantee of quality but also proof of commitment and responsibility. Yes, when you know you're offering solid, durable and well-made products, you don't hesitate to offer a lifetime guarantee. This is true of brands such as Mission Workshop, North St., Inside Line Equipment, Chrome Industries and WANDRD.  You can also choose a brand that offers a repair service. Topo Designs not only offers colourfully designed women's and men's backpacks with a lifetime guarantee, but also a repair service.  Producing ecologically, ethically and sustainably comes at a cost. That's why the price of some backpacks can be high. If you're looking for a brand with an ethical backpack at an affordable price, check out Ucon Acrobatics.  See also our :
