Tips for choosing your hiking backpack
1. Determine the right size for your outing
- Day hikes (10 to 30 L): Ideal for carrying the essentials: water, snacks, waterproof jacket and first aid kit.
- 2 to 3-day trek (30 to 50 L): Perfect for adding a change of clothes, a light sleeping bag and bivouac equipment.
- Trek lasting several days (50 to 70 L): Necessary to carry a tent, mattress, sleeping bag and provisions for complete autonomy.
- Long-distance expedition (+70 L): Designed for fully autonomous adventures, with all the equipment you need for several weeks.
Tip: The total weight of your loaded bag should not exceed 20% of your body weight to protect your comfort and health.
2. Focus on comfort and ergonomics
A good hiking backpack should offer :
- An adjustable carrying system: padded shoulder straps, lumbar belt and adjustable back for optimum weight distribution.
- Effective back ventilation: systems such as Osprey's AirScape or Deuter's taut mesh back to limit perspiration.
- Compression straps: to stabilise the load and prevent swaying.
Always test your loaded pack before setting off to adjust the settings to your body shape.
3. Choose hard-wearing, suitable materials
Hiking backpacks are put to a tough test. Choose robust, lightweight materials such as ripstop nylon or high-density polyester. Some models incorporate water-repellent treatments or rain covers to protect your gear from the elements.
