Velocity High Visibility - Ortlieb

Marine - bag addict -

Hi everyone! I've been waiting a long time to be able to test this bag, I'm super happy to finally be able to give you my feedback on it? . I knew Ortlieb, of course, and I had already seen some friends wearing the classic Velocity, but I had never been able to see the High Visibility in real life. First, during the day (without any particular lighting), the ripstop fabric used gives it a very technical side, as if it were made of graph paper (or dotted paper like my Bullet Journal?). I like the fact that it is very simple: no pocket on the outside, it looks like a very basic bag. It is very light (0.850 KG against 1.150 KG for the classic Velocity in PVC), but I think they could have made it even lighter, by modifying the back: the straps are fixed to the back by screws, via parts in plastic (let's call them "plastic ears"). Which for once must be indestructible, but they could have simply reinforced the attachment of the straps by using a strap, for example. It would have been very resistant and much lighter.

I was afraid that these "ears" would bother me or dig into my back, and in fact I never feel them. Firstly thanks to the rigidity of the back (the bag does not bend, even loaded) and also thanks to the thickness of the foam patches (greater than that of the ears): my back rests on the patches which keep it at a distance reasonable the ears of my back (pardon me the absurdity of this sentence? …) As said previously, the rigidity of the back constitutes a true advantage. It is obtained thanks to a plastic plate located inside the bag. We would tend to believe that the straighter the back of the bag, the less comfortable it is (which may be true depending on the materials used) but in reality, the more the back of the bag is kept straight, the less the weight of the bag is removed of your body, so the less you work unnecessarily. (It's always the same center of gravity story that we explain in the article on how to load your bag properly).

The foam patches are spaced out in such a way that you won't sweat your back, even after a good hill? . They are made of a fairly basic EVA foam, but with good density, good water resistance and easy to clean. The straps are very comfortable and come naturally to rest on your shoulders thanks to two pieces of fabric which move on the plastic ears. The two pieces of fabric are attached to the straps with bartak seams: impossible to tear them! The straps are made of a very breathable mesh fabric. Small miss from Ortlieb: the straps of the suspenders are reflective, but much too low. Once I put my bag on, the reflective part of the straps is under my arms… The lifting handle is rather long (26cm), compared to the backpacks I had the opportunity to test. I find it convenient to be able to grab it quickly.

Ortlieb, on the other hand, advertises that the base of the bag is reinforced and that the bag is therefore stable, which is not entirely true. Only when the bag is loaded is it stable, otherwise it will constantly fall forward. On the other hand, the plastic parts allow some protection against friction on the ground, but the textile part of the bottom is not reinforced. At night, this bag is a bomb! Aesthetically, I find that the fabric is magnificent, the whole thing remains minimalist and extremely effective... impossible not to spot you! I originally believed that a high frequency weld could only be achieved when smooth plastic materials were joined. Here, the fabric seems to be coated with polyurethane on the inside and that seems to be enough. Same remark for the "fixing patch" of the bicycle lamp since it is welded to the reflective canvas. The braiding density of the patch makes it very resistant to abrasion and tearing. In addition, like on the classic Velocity, I can attach lamps of different sizes and with two different orientations.

The closing of the bag is done in rolltop (completely waterproof), from the front: you have to face the bag to close it, which I do not find very practical. In my opinion, it lacks 10 extra centimeters of flaps, but some of you will prefer the fact that there are not 15 laps to do. The 50 mm x 85 mm scratch on the front is a classic male-female (which I tend to prefer to the new "hermaphrodite" velcros, which are more aesthetic but less effective). Its surface is well chosen: the bag is well and truly closed once the scratch is applied.

Inside is a ripstop fabric pocket that I can detach with two press studs . I find this pocket very practical because I can put my wallet, my sunglasses, pencils and any A5 notebook in it and detach it to take it in another bag, like my handbag by example. The fact that it is light in color allows me to easily identify it inside the bag. All the plastic accessories are Duraflex… needless to mention the reliability of these products. And finally, let's not forget that Ortlieb guarantees all its bags for 5 years, which is not negligible. I leave you several photos of the bag so that you can get your idea, as well as my rating? .
