Waterproof backpacks

Waterproof backpacks

At KEUS, we’ve brought together a selection of stylish and practical waterproof backpacks so you no longer have to fear rain, dust or humidity. On our online store, you’ll find waterproof backpacks from brands that have already made their mark in the waterproofing game (RAINS, Ucon Acrobatics, Sandqvist…), available in black and a variety of colours. We’ve also unearthed some hidden gems that can easily hold their own thanks to the quality of their waterproof builds (North St., Inside Line Equipment). To help you quickly find the waterproof or water-resistant backpack you need, we’ve created two subcategories within the “Durability” section on our website: “100% Waterproof” and “Rain-Resistant”. But it’s worth explaining the criteria behind those categories. And because we love talking materials and tech, let’s take a moment to break down what defines waterproofing in backpacks – and the difference between terms like waterproof, water-resistant, water-repellent and fully sealed. So if you want to keep singing in the rain without your backpack turning into a floating wreck, read on.

100% waterproof, water-resistant or sealed: what’s the difference?

While they may sound similar, these terms represent key differences in our view.

100% waterproof vs water-resistant: how much protection do you really get?

According to Larousse, “waterproof” refers to an object that, by nature or treatment, doesn’t allow water or fluids to penetrate. “Sealed” means it doesn’t let in liquids, gases, dust or humidity. “Waterproof” (in English) refers to items guaranteed to be sealed, while “water-repellent” describes a surface, especially fabric, that causes water to bead and slide off without soaking through. So far so good, right?

We’ve grouped waterproof backpacks into two main families: truly waterproof (100% waterproof, sealed, impermeable) and simply water-resistant (repellent). In short, if you spend hours in the rain and want peace of mind, go for a fully waterproof backpack. If you’re more of a dash-for-shelter type, a water-repellent one will do the job.

The IP rating: a standard to measure waterproofing

Backpack waterproofing is often defined using an IP (Ingress Protection) rating – an international standard set by the IEC. There are different levels of waterproofing, expressed through numbers. For example, a backpack with an IP61 rating offers total protection against dust and vertical water droplets. If you need a submersible backpack, go for an IP68 rating.

The hydrostatic head test: putting pressure on fabrics

Another way to measure the waterproofness of backpack fabrics is the hydrostatic head test. This test measures how much water pressure a material can withstand before it lets water through. The result tells you how waterproof the fabric is. Rain pressure usually ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 mm (or Schmerber – 1 mm = 1 Schmerber). But don’t assume that a rating of 1,500 means you’ll stay dry forever – it’s enough for light rain for an hour or so, but not a downpour. This test is commonly used for outdoor gear and helps fine-tune your waterproof backpack choice.

Why and how to choose a waterproof backpack

There are plenty of reasons to go for a waterproof backpack. In fact, apart from price, there’s no reason not to. Unless you live somewhere it never rains and there’s no dust – in which case, go ahead. Buying a waterproof backpack is a long-term investment. Prices tend to reflect the technical materials used. For sport, travel, everyday life, hiking, cycling or kayaking – think about how you’ll use your waterproof backpack and treat it as a long-term companion.

Good to know: some brands offer their bestselling backpacks in various fabric versions – waterproof or sealed – which can vary in price.

And of course, think about the volume you’ll need for your gear.

A waterproof backpack for the city, hiking, cycling... or even pétanque

Do you get around by bike? Are you into weekend camping or hiking, and an urban hobbit during the week? Travelling with a camera? Freelance, student or digital nomad looking for a laptop bag? If you answered yes to at least one of these, go for a waterproof backpack – it’s worth it for the peace of mind. To carry and protect your laptop, browse our work bag selection (Ucon Acrobatics, RAINS, Sandqvist…).

When it comes to waterproofing in backpacks, clothing or gear, it’s all about the design and material choices: coatings, zips, seams and closures. The price of a waterproof backpack depends on the level of water, humidity and dust resistance of the materials used.

Good to know: waterproof backpacks are generally more expensive than water-resistant ones. For full waterproofing, look for X-PAC™ fabric, polyurethane-coated polyesters, Cordura (nylon-based), waxed cotton, or HT500 – a high-performance fabric developed by Mission Workshop. For closures, make sure the zips are waterproof – YKK’s AQUASEAL® zips are fully sealed and waterproof.

One last tip: rolltop closures offer better waterproofing. The roll-top flap covers and protects the main closure system (zip, drawcord etc.).
